![]() ![]() Many of us do not give blinking much thought, but scientists have pondered its function over the years. “Our findings show that one of the subtlest of human movements - eye blinking - appears to have a surprising effect on the coordination of everyday human interaction.” The authors believe that a longer blink may signify understanding. This gives weight to the scientists’ theory that blinking is another type of nonverbal clue that plays a part in conversations. When the avatar’s blinks were longer, the participants’ answers were several seconds shorter. When asked, the participants did not perceive any differences between the blink durations, but subconsciously, they do seem to have taken note. The durations were based on blinks measured in standard conversations, so neither were unusual. For others, they were longer, lasting 607 milliseconds. The avatar, when “listening” to responses, would nod along in a manner modeled on real-life conversations.įor some of the sessions, the avatar’s blinks were short, lasting 208 milliseconds. Participants talked to an avatar that acted as a “virtual listener.” The avatar would ask questions - such as, “How was your weekend, what did you do?” - and the participant would respond accordingly. The researchers theorized that if blinks do carry information, altering their duration might make a difference to how an individual involved in a conversation might behave.įor their experiment, the scientists used virtual reality. They have published their findings in the journal PLOS One. The authors of the recent study believe that blinking conveys a message that we can subconsciously read and understand. Humans also tend to look into each other’s eyes during a conversation. When one person is speaking, the other responds with nods of the head and so-called verbal nods, such as “mhm” and “uh-huh.” However it does have me wondering if maybe the hub is sending spurious transmissions or something and causing the flicker.Īll of this recent episode started happening about a day after a power outage.A conversation is a two-way street. My answer to that was just to finally buy insteon modules and dump X10. I noticed that the hub (2242) wouldn't control X10 anymore. I had just a few plug in lamp modules remaining. Interestingly enough this recent episode seems to have coincided with my hub no longer working with X10. The fireplace switch doesn't seem to flicker nearly as much as the two in the bathroom. A few weeks after these started flickering, I'm noticing the other one (fireplace lights) started acting up again. They were bought and installed at the same time. And then one day, they both started flickering. The other two were working fine for quite a while. ![]() And when I reconnected it, it didn't flicker anymore. I had removed it from the wall to troubleshoot. It will happen when I'm home alone and haven't touched anything in a while. This doesn't appear to be related to insteon traffic. None of my other insteon devices flicker. they've all got the intermittent flicker issue. I have 3 dual band switchlincs all on the same FW. I know I'm resurrecting an old thread, but did anyone ever come up with a resolution to this problem?
